What to Pack for Florida's Gulf Coast, Season by Season
Sweaters in January? Rain jackets in July? A simple packing guide for Siesta Key, Sarasota and Cape Coral all year.
Winter (December to February) is mild and sunny, with warm afternoons and cool evenings that can dip into the 50s. Pack layers: a light sweater or jacket, long pants for dinners out and a swimsuit for the heated pool. The Gulf is chilly for most swimmers in winter, so the pool will be your best friend.
Spring (March to May) is our sunniest, driest season. Think shorts, sundresses, a sun hat and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen. Evenings are comfortable outdoors, perfect for dinner on the patio.
Summer (June to September) is hot and humid, with short afternoon thunderstorms that roll through and clear out. Pack light, breathable clothes, a compact umbrella or rain jacket and a reusable water bottle. The Gulf is bathtub warm.
Fall (October and November) brings warm water, fewer crowds and lower humidity as the season goes on. It is one of our favorite times of year. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, so consider travel insurance for summer and fall trips.
