Cape Coral: Canals, Burrowing Owls and Sanibel Shells
Over 400 miles of canals, the biggest burrowing owl population in Florida and some of the world's best shelling nearby.
Cape Coral is a city built around water. It has more than 400 miles of canals, more than any other city in the world by many counts, which means boating, fishing and sunset views are part of everyday life.
It also has an unexpected celebrity: the burrowing owl. These tiny, long-legged owls live in burrows in open lots and yards, and Cape Coral has the largest population in Florida. Look for little perches and staked-off burrows around town, and enjoy them from a respectful distance. Kids are delighted.
Day trips are easy. Sanibel Island, famous for shelling (people call the bent-over posture the "Sanibel stoop"), and Fort Myers Beach are each a short drive away. Families also love Sun Splash Family Waterpark in town on hot afternoons.
Come home to Cape House, light the fire pit and watch the stars over a quiet neighborhood.
