Biking the Legacy Trail and Other Family Rides

· 2 min read · By the BigTree Stays team

A flat, paved rail trail through woods and wetlands, plus easy beach rides on Siesta Key. Sarasota is made for bikes.

The Legacy Trail follows an old railroad line through Sarasota County, from the historic train depot in Venice north toward downtown Sarasota. It is paved, flat and separated from traffic, which makes it ideal for families with kids on their own bikes or in trailers.

Along the way you pass pine woods, creeks and wetlands, with herons, ospreys and turtles to spot. Rest stops with shade and restrooms make it easy to ride as far as little legs want and turn back.

On Siesta Key, biking is the easiest way to get around. Ride to the beach without hunting for parking, roll into the Village for ice cream, or cruise the quieter side streets at sunset. Our Sweetwater home includes cruiser bikes for guests, and bike rentals are easy to find on the island.

Nature lovers should also try the Celery Fields, a short drive east of town, where boardwalks and a hill give you views over wetlands full of birds.
