What a Long Walk on the Beach Does for You
Soft sand, salt air and a horizon to look at. Why a beach walk might be the best part of your vacation routine.
A long walk on the beach sounds like a cliche until you take one. Then you remember why everyone talks about it.
Walking on soft sand asks more of your body than walking on pavement. Studies have found it takes noticeably more energy, and the shifting surface works the small muscles of your feet, ankles and calves. Walk at the water's edge on firmer sand for an easier stroll, or higher up the beach for more of a workout.
Your mind benefits too. Researchers who study "blue spaces" have linked time near water with lower stress and a better mood. The steady sound of the waves, the wide horizon and the simple act of noticing shells and birds pull your attention away from your phone and into the moment.
On Siesta Key you can walk for miles on sand that stays cool underfoot. Go at sunrise for quiet and cool air, or at sunset for the show. Either way, it is the cheapest therapy on the island.
