Alligators and Treetops: Myakka River State Park With Kids
One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, with a canopy walkway above the trees and gators sunning on the riverbanks.
About half an hour east of Sarasota, Myakka River State Park protects about 58 square miles of wetlands, prairies and oak hammocks. It is one of the oldest and largest state parks in Florida, and it feels a world away from the beach.
Kids remember two things. First, the alligators: on a sunny day you can spot them basking along the river and lakes from a safe distance. Second, the canopy walkway, a suspension bridge strung through the treetops with a tall tower above the forest.
Boat and tram tours run most of the year and are a relaxed way to see wildlife with a guide. You can also rent bikes or kayaks, picnic under the oaks or walk short trails.
Go in the morning, bring snacks and water, and you will be back at your pool by mid-afternoon with plenty of stories.
