Red Tide, Seaweed and Beach Conditions: How to Check Before You Go

· 2 min read · By the BigTree Stays team

What red tide is, how often it shows up and the easy ways to check today's beach conditions.

Red tide is a natural bloom of microscopic algae that occurs from time to time along Florida's Gulf Coast. When it is present, it can cause coughing or itchy eyes near the water for some people. Many weeks of the year there is none at all, and conditions can change from beach to beach and day to day.

The easiest way to check is the Beach Conditions Reporting System run by Mote Marine Laboratory, which posts updates for many local beaches, including respiratory irritation, dead fish, water color and flags. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also publishes regular red tide updates.

If one beach is affected, another may be clear, and a heated pool at home is always a good backup. Our team keeps an eye on conditions and is happy to suggest the best beach for the day.
