Stars and Manatees: The Bishop Museum With Kids
A science museum, a planetarium and a manatee rehabilitation habitat, about half an hour north of our Sarasota homes.
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in downtown Bradenton is a perfect half-day outing, and a lifesaver on a rainy afternoon.
Kids can explore hands-on science exhibits and Florida history, from Ice Age animals to the people who lived along these rivers long ago. The planetarium shows take you on a tour of the night sky, often far clearer than what you can see from your pool deck.
The museum is also part of a manatee rehabilitation program. Its habitat cares for manatees recovering before they return to the wild, and watching these gentle giants up close is unforgettable.
Bradenton's Riverwalk is right outside, with playgrounds, a splash pad and views of the Manatee River, so plan time to run around afterward.
